A Note on Shipping Times
We want to keep you in the loop on something affecting every online shop right now: mail is taking longer to arrive than it used to.
Over the past year, the U.S. Postal Service rolled out a major reorganization of its delivery network as part of its long-term “Delivering for America” plan. The practical result is that packages are spending more time in transit than they used to — and the effect is felt just about everywhere.
Why it's taking longer
USPS consolidated and rerouted its mail through new regional processing centers. That change has lengthened delivery times broadly, and it hits some areas harder than others:
- Rural areas and places far from a processing center tend to see the longest waits.
- Alaska, Hawaii, and the U.S. territories are the most affected of all (more on that below).
- Everywhere else, deliveries are often still reasonably quick — just allow a little more cushion than you used to.
What to expect
Here's the honest picture, so you can plan ahead:
- Please allow some extra time for your order to arrive after it ships. Many orders still move quickly, but it's worth building in a buffer — especially for anything with a deadline.
- Alaska, Hawaii & U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and others) are seeing the biggest change. For these areas, USPS Ground Advantage is now 10 days or more, and lighter packages (under 1 lb) now travel by surface transportation too.
- Priority Mail is faster to these areas — a 2–4 day expectation to Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the USVI, and 2–6 days to Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. Priority Mail Express is not affected and remains the quickest option.
How to make sure your yarn arrives on time
A little planning goes a long way right now:
- Order early. This is the big one, especially for a project with a deadline — a birthday, a baby on the way, or a handmade holiday gift. Give yourself a comfortable cushion.
- Consider Priority Mail or Express at checkout if you need your yarn sooner, particularly to Alaska, Hawaii, or a territory.
- Stock up in one order. Ordering everything at once — early — means you'll have your full project on hand, with matching dye lots, before you cast on. (Our guide to starting your holiday gift making early has more on getting ahead of the rush.)
What we're doing on our end
The part we control, we stay on top of:
- We pack and ship quickly, so the only clock running is the carrier's, not ours.
- You'll get tracking on every order, so you can follow your yarn the whole way home.
- We're here if anything goes sideways. If a package is running unusually late, just reach out — a real person (often a master knitter) will help you sort it out.
Thank you for your patience
We know waiting for a package you're excited about is hard, and we wish we could hand you your yarn the moment you order it. Until teleportation arrives, the best we can do is pack with care, ship fast, offer you the quickest options we can, and keep you informed — and that we promise to do.
Thank you, as always, for supporting a small, family-run yarn shop, wherever in the country you call home. We can't wait to see what you make.
