Oregon's Old Growth Hat Knitting Pattern

Peargirl Knits Patterns. My friend’s sweetheart works in an Oregon Mill in very cold temperatures during the winter. He requested a soft, thick cabled earflap hat to keep his head and ears warm during his long hours on the job. I chose a simple 8 stitch cable that reminds me of the gnarly bark on Oregon’s old growth fir trees. Baby alpaca was a natural choice for softness. Both the cabled texture and bulky yarn provide added warmth for the coldest winter days. Materials: Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande Tweed (110 yds/100 g) ~ 2 skeins. ? Needles – One 16” 5.50 mm (#9 US) and one 16” 6.00 mm (#10 US) circular needle, and one set of 4 or 5 double point needles (DPN) in larger size. ? One cable needle in size equal to or smaller than working needle. ? One 5.50 mm (I) Crochet Hook for single crochet edging and for attaching braids. ? Tapestry needle for weaving in ends ? 4 Stitch Markers Gauge: 15 sts = 4 inches in Textured Cable Pattern using size 6.00 mm (#10 US) needles, or appropriate size to achieve gauge. Sizes: 19-20.25”, (20.5-21.75”, 22-23.25”) head circumference. If head size is in between these measurements, choose the next size up.
