Spirit of the Southwest (S-2012) is a Fiber Trends triangular lace shawl by Evelyn A. Clark, prompted by a trip to New Mexico. Its motifs show butterflies over mountains, corn rows, and a river where rabbits play, all framed by squash blossoms.
Knitting starts at the middle of the back neck and works downwards in garter-stitch lace. Along the sides, the lace edging serves as the bind-off, and I-cord finishes the top edge.
- Craft: Knitting
- Finished size: About 43" (109 cm) deep × 90" (229 cm) across the top; go down a needle size for a slightly smaller shawl
- Yarn: Lace weight, about 1200 yds (1097 m)
- Needles: US 6 (4 mm) 29" or 32" (72 or 80 cm) circular and double-pointed needles; a US 8 (5 mm) or larger double-pointed needle; a spare needle about 2 sizes smaller
- Gauge: 20 sts = 4" in garter stitch, unblocked
- Format: Printed pattern
Good for: lace knitters who enjoy a picture shawl.
